Brilliant Work By Ellerslie Fillies

“The Press" Special Service

WELLINGTON. January 17.

The brilliant Ellerslie fillies Yahabeebe and Ganymede this morning showed greater speed than has previously been seen in training at Trentham. They completed half a mile in 45 2-ssec. On that run they look like filling the major placings in the Wellington Stakes on the first day of the Wellington summer meeting on Saturday.

The best of the Wellington Cup horses were Llanisfair and Cardigan. Finito and Yemen also did well without recording outstanding time, but the wellfancied Somerset Fair fell from grace, failing to run on over a mile after setting a strong early pace.

Lesser horses which enhanced their prospects at the meeting included Zariba, King’s Crest, Drowsing, Turon, Sharp, Melody Fair, Copenhagen, Coq d’Or, Darenal, Poppet, Japonica and Dhofar.

Galloping took place on the outside of the course proper and the going was very fast. From, the half-mile down the six furlongs chute. Ganymede (Jury) and Yahabeebe (Hughes) were not distressed after running their sensational trial. Ganymede, which had a slight advantage in weight, had the measure of Yahabeebe at the mid-distance, but in the final stages Yahabeebe asserted herself and she appeared to be doing slightly the better at the end.

Yahabeebe has picked up in the last two days, and she looks much better now than when she worked on Tuesday. She is the logical favourite in the Wellington Stakes.

Ganymede, obviously, is one of the most brilliant two-year-olds seen out for some time, and she is sure to make a race of it all the way with Yahabeebe. Somerset Fair (Campbell) was quickly in front of Relinquish (McDonald) and Llanisfair (Mudford) from the mile. Somerset Fair was the pacemaker to the straight, but he then shortened stride and Llanisfair, under a hold swept past him and was doing much the better at the end, with Relinquish beaten off. The distance was run in Imin 42sec, the last half-mile taking 52 l-ssec, and the final three furlongs 38 4-ssec. With half the distance covered, Llanisfair was at least five lengths behind his companions, but once he settled to his work he soon had their measure. It was a most impressive Wellington Cup trial. Disappointing Effort Somerset Fair ran his first halfmile in 49 4-ssec, and the five furlongs in Imin 3 l-ssec, but he compounded quickly and he would need to do much better to be a cup prospect. Cardigan (Sellwood) recorded better time than Llanisfair, when he shaded Rexdale (McDonald) with Canon (Jones) well back. Cardigan was kept up to his work, whereas Llanisfair was under a hold. Cardigan registered Imin 41 4-ssec. The last half-mile took 51 see, and the final three furlongs 37scc.

Cardigan looks much better now than when he raced at Trentham in October and this morning's gallop will bring him into favour for the Cup. Rexdale did well and should have prospects on the later days of the meeting. Canon was disappointing. Finito (C. Harris) ran a mile in Imin 45sec without exerting himself. He picked up Hilili (Beck) at the six furlongs and they came from the half-mile in 50 2-ssec, and from the three furlongs in 36 4-ssec, finishing together. Finito has not looked better, and he should be the best of the lightweights in the Wellington Cup.

Yeman (Jury) and Watch and Wait (Hanlin) were not asked for their best over a mile, the last seven furlongs in Imin 33 l-ssec, and the final half-mile in 51 sec. Yeman is rarely asked for serious work in training. He is in solid condition and looks ready for a big effort on Saturday. Watch and Wait is not engaged till the later days. Zariba (Burt) was more impressive than Barobar (Mudford) over five furlongs in Imin 3 l-ssec. the last four in 48 l-ssec, and the final three in 35 4-ssec. Zariba is not engaged on Saturday, but he should add to his record at the meeting. Barobar is a sluggish track galloper. Drowsing (Mackie) was too good for the smart track galloper Super Corn (Maddicks) over live furlongs, the last four taking 48 4-sscc, and the final three. 36 l-ssec. Drowsing created a good impression and has the recent form to strengthen his claim in the Pencarrow Hack Handicap in which he is well drawn at the barrier. Freshened Up A winner at Trentham in October, Turon (Hughes) showed that he had freshened up well when he beat Can-Can (Smith) by a length at the end of five furlongs in Imin sscc, the last half-mile taking 48 3-sscc. Turon is in the Pencarrow Hack Handicap. Sharp (Sellwood) was much too good for Zekan (Schumacher), over throe furlongs down the chute, finishing three lengths in front and recording 25sec lor the final two furlongs. A hanging bit was tried on Sharp and she ran more truly than she did at her last appearance at Mana* watu when she was beaten narrowly by Somella. Melody Fair (Campbell) sprinted half a mile in 47 3-ssoc. She has no recent form, but she has done well in training since she has been at Trentham. Down the chute, Copenhagen (Hanlin), Coq d’Or (Stokes) and Darenal (Cowles) were abreast after running half a mile in 47 3-ssec. All three pleased, especially, Darenal. Though he has not raced lately, Copenhagen is in solid condition. Coq d’Or is a massive colt, and shows more promise than average. Poppet (Schumacher) was too fast for Chaos (Mackie) and Gold Lane (Mudford) over half-a-mile, recording 48sec. Poppet gained an early advantage and did not look like surrendering it. She was two lengths in front of Chaos at the finish with Gold Lane another length away. Showing that she had recovered from her tiring trip to Trentham on Tuesday, Japonica (Sellwood) beat Warwick (Smith) by four lengths at the end of five furlongs in Imin 3sec. She ran the last half-mile in 48sec. and the final three furlongs in 36sec.

Japonica has not shown her best in her latest starts, -but she would need only to reproduce this morning’s gallop to take a hand in the finish of the Telegraph Handicap. . Warwick galloped sluggishly. Dhofar (Jury) finished on to beat Royal Zorra (Mackie) by a length, with Bugle Boy (Wylie) two lengths away, at the end of half a mile in 47 4-ssec. The final three furlongs took 35 2-ssec. Rare Charm (Hughes), which is not engaged on the first day, was restrained to run half a mile in 58sec. She speeded up slightly to run the final three furlongs in 41 4-ssec. Passive Impresses San Diego (Hughes) jumped away from the mile ahead of Passive (Mudford), but once the latter was given her head in the. straight she drew up on terms and was the more impressive at the end in Imin 44sec. The last half-mile was run in 54 3-ssec, and the final three furlongs in 39 l-ssec. Both are in splendid order for engagements on the later days.

Believe Me (Hoy) was slightly ahead of Shaun (Jury) alter running six furlongs,, the last three in 36 4-ssec.

The Wellington Cup candidate, Fettle (Mudford), was much too good for Champion (Mackie) over five furlongs, having an advantage of four lengths at the end and recording Imni 5 4-ssec. Fettle ran the last half-mile in 49 4-ssec, and the final three furlongs in 36 4-ssec. Though he failed at Avondale last week, he looks ready for a prominent showing on Saturday. Dunray (Hanlin) was more impressive than Tcaka (Stokes) over half a mile in 51 3-ssec, the final three furlongs in 38sec. Dunray may be a light-weight prospect in the Camp Hack Handicap.

Down the chute, Mexico (Nuttall) completed half a mile in 48 4-ssec. He is still at the improving stage. Tonka (Hoy) was doing better than King Robin (Stokes) throughout half a mile in 50sec, the last three furlongs taking 37sec. Tonka is a good type, and as the winner of his two last races, he will have to be respected in the Camp Hack Handicap which is for apprentice riders.

Imitation (C. Harris) was again too good for Regal Dignitary (Nuttall), winning their halfmile trial by four lengths and recording 50sec. Imitation ran the final three furlongs in 36sec. He is better now than when he finished second in the Wellesley Stakes. Regal Dignitary suffered an attack of colic earlier in the week and has been withdrawn from the Wellington Stakes.

Equipage (Wilson) ran half a mile in 51 l-ssec, the final three furlongs in 37sec. St. Vincent (Hughes) was impressive when beating Moorlight (Cowles) by a length over half a mile in 49sec, the final three furlongs taking 36sec. St. Vincent was working comfortably throughout. He looks more solid than previously. On the straight course, Beejay (Smith) was a length better than Emulation (Hazelwood) over half a mile in 48 l-ssec. An easy, half-mile was completed by Culminate in 54sec, the final three furlongs in 39sec. In a similar task, Major Effort (Wylie) returned 51 sec.

Strada (Smith) did well when he left a mile behind in Imin 45 l-ssec. He came from the halfmile in 51 4-ssec.

Chattering (Mackie), which will resume at Ashhurst on Monday, was not troubled to sprint three furlongs in 3ssec.

Toparoa struck himself while doing pacework on Wednesday and he is not a certain starter in the Wellington Cup.

On the plough, which had been watered heavily and was greasy in places, King’s Crest (Nuttall) was more impressive than Harleston (Jury) over a mile in Imin 46 l-ssec. The last half-mile took 54 3-ssec. and the final three furlongs 39 l-ssec.

Social News Dead "The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN. January 17. The good race mare. Social News, died recently at Tiinaru. She was only 10 years old, and from her condition it would appear that she had had an accident in her paddock. Her King's Command colt, which was two and a half months old at the time, is being hand reared. Bv the imported sire, Paper Boy, from the Psychology mare. Lady Nordica, Social News won 10 races for Mr 11. Halliday, of Dunedin. Her most important successes were the D.J.C. Flying Handicap, of seven furlongs, in which she equalled the track record of Imin 25sec, the Publicans’ Handicap, the Riverton Pourakino Handicap, and the Wyndham Flying Handicap, which she won three times. At the dispersal of Mr Halliday’s stock, she was bought by the late Mr Andrew Grant for 260gns. She did not improve on her winning record in the ownership of Mr Grant, and at the sale of his bloodstock she was purchased by Mr Grant’s niece, Miss Donetta Grant, for 370 fins. At the time she was in foal to the Beau Pere horse, Beau Leon, and the result of this mating is the two-year-old Ace High, which is raced on lease by the Wingatui trainer, F. T. Aiming. Her only other progeny is the foal by King's Command.
