NEW LIFT IN THE HOUSE

IN OPERATION IN MARCH

(Neto Zeatana Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 16.

A 30-ton crane with an arm 100 ft long, capable of lifting five tons, was used this morning to take new lift motors and machinery weighing half a ton from ground level to the top of Parliament House. The crane also removed the old lift machinery which has been in service for more than 30 years. The installation of a new main lift in Parliament House began last December. The new lift is expected to be in operation in March. A few structural alterations have been made to accommodate the new lift, which will service both passengers and goods. It is believed that all Prime Ministers since and including the late Mr M. J. Savage have been at one time or another victims of the old lift’s temperament. Mr Holland has twice been rescued after unpredictable stops and has clambered over the gates and down a ladder to the nearest floor. Ministers and members have also been trapped, the heaviest member of Parliament, Mr T. P. Paikea, on one occasion having great difficulty in escaping from temporary encagement.
