WORLD AFFAIRS
Sir, —It is reported that a businessman paid a working girl £4O for £6OOO worth of stamps, and in story-book style she gave to charity not only her alleged ill-gotten profit of £3B but her £2 of capital expenditure as well, and also suffered a humiliating reprimand from her employers. 1. that ‘‘good business” deal synonymous with the trade, oil, mineral, and defence agreements negotiated by the powerful nations with the so-called backward nations and island peoples? I note the constant and increasing number of squabbles among nations, and even the letters of your correspondents are becoming more violent with their criticism and intolerance. If the peoples of the universe do not speedily settle their differences peacefully and honourably, the third world war will soon be upon us. As things are. I believe that atomic weapons will be used before 1957 is past, and not for practice, either.—Yours, etc., G. PIPER. January 11, 1957.
