Southland Double Won By Some Day And Pilot Light

”The Press” Special Service

INVERCARGILL. Jan. 6. The winning double on the second day of the Southland Racing Club’s summer meeting on Saturday was backed down to short odds, the Some Day-Pilot Light combination returning £7 8s 6d for £l. The brilliant Some Day scored her third win in five days when she won the first leg, the Shorts Handicap.

Pilot Light, a three-year-old Kurdistan gelding, raced right up to his unlucky second in the Wyndham Cup when he easily beat Dinner Chat and Writer in the second leg, the Southland Handicap. The racing was held in fine weather before a good attendance. The track was heavy early, but improved during the day. The totalisator handled £49,394 ss, compared with £43,439 5s on the second day last year, an increase of £5955. The total for the meeting was £89.884 10s, compared with £83,882 15s, an increase of £6OOl 15s.

R. J. Mackie, rider of Kasr-el-Nil, which finished third in the Shorts Handicap, failed "to draw the correct weight on returning to scale and the horse was disqualified. Mijiji was promoted to third and Brooke to fourth. Mackie lost no gear and the loss of weight could only be attributed to him perspiring freely as he was wearing a pullover and a lead vest beneath his colours. Mackie failed by Jib to make the correct weight. W. J. Hillis, rider of Brude in the Gladstone Hurdles Handicap, was charged under rule 2748 with having attempted to weigh out without irons. The committee severely cautioned him.

After the Simper Stakes an inquiry was held into the falling of Cafeteria (E. G. Low), which brought down Surapt (R. J. Mackie) and Vamoose (J. D. Crawford). The committee found that Jet Flight (J. Didham) had run up quickly and changed direction to avoid getting on the heels of Top Flight. The occurrence was accidental and no blame was attached to Didham. Mackie was admitted to hospital with a broken leg and concussion. Unbeaten Record Some Day maintained her unbeaten record over the holidays by winning the Shorts Handicap decisively. Unlike her earlier successes, when she won from end to end, she trailed the leaders until the straight entrance, where the pacemaker, Kasr-el-Nil, ran wide. Some Day came through on the inner, immediately took charge, and was not in any danger from then on. winning by three-quarters of a length. Irish Wings beat Kasr-el-Nil by half a head for second, with Mijiji a head away fourth. Brooke, v/hich had been one of the leaders to the straight, was next, eight lengths back, ahead of Regardless, which had been at the rear throughout. Pilot Light justified confident support in the Southland Handicap, which he won decisively after securing the trail to the straight. Landon was the first to show out. and racing through the straight he was clear of Pilot Light and Lucky Bill together, ahead of Flair. Armando and Writer in line, with two lengths to Dinner Chat, which was followed by Field Chief. Racing into the back Landon was two lengths clear of Lucky Bill and Pilot Light, this pair being joined by Writer, which was pulling hard, ahead of Armando. Flair and Dinner Chat, with Field Chief still at the rear. Landon was followed past the half-mile by Writer, with half a length to Pilot Light, a length to Lucky Bill, ahead of Armando, then Dinner Chat. At the straight entrance Landon was being challenged by Pilot Light and Writer with Dinner Chat improving from the back, and Lucky Bill and Flair ahead of Armando and Field Chief. Pilot Light was in charge immediately the field straightened up, and although Dinner Chat threw out a challenge in the run in he always had her measure, to win by two lengths. Writer was three lengths back third, with a length and a Ijalf to Landon, four lengths to Lucky Bill, a length to Flair and Field Chief together, and five lengths to Armando. Nose Decision

Jet Flight, a two-year-old halfsister by Super to Ocean Flight, opened her account in the Simper Stakes, in which she secured a nose decision over Kelp, which had looked all over a winner short of the post. The hot favourite, Cafeteria, fell at the end of two furlongs, and Vamoose and Surapt went over the ton of her. Top Flight,. Kelp and Clinton Belle were the first to show out from Jet Flight, with Cafeteria, Surapt and Oakfield next. After Cafeteria had fallen, Kelp and Top Flight carried on in front, and were closelv attended by Clinton Belle, Jet Flight, Oakfield and Quiet Corner into the straight. Kelp looked the likely winner at the furlong, where Jet Flight challenged, but Kelp fought back gamely and it was not until the post was reached that Jet Flight gained a nose decision. Oakfield was six lengths back third, threeouarters of a length in front of Clinton Belle, which was two lengths clear of Quiet Corner. Top Flight was three lengths away, then a gap to Lady Super.
