A.R.C. SUMMER CUP TODAY

Dynamite Most Favoured ‘‘The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, December 27. Unseasonal weather today, when there was rain to ease the ground, brought Dynamite and Black Raven into favour for the Summer Cup on the second day of the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting tomorrow. It also brightened the prospects of Highland Sandy and the Hastings visitor, Yoho. Dynamite. Black Raven, and Yoho are fresh runners, having missed the racing on the first day. Dynamite has 7-13, which is second from topweight, in a cramped handicap. At his last start he finished second in a mile and a half race with 7-10, and he looked on the verge of winning form. The Summer Cup will be the first leg of the double and will be run over a mile and a quarter for £2OOO. Speed, rather than stamina, is what

last attempt he made the' running until the last furlong and was outstayed only by True Bridge. He is a seven-year-old gelding by Treasure Hunt from Royal Dink raced by Mr T. H. Prentice and trained by W. H Morrow at Te Rapa. An attraction besides the Summer Cup will be the King’s Plate, .weight-for-age, of one mile. The field fell away disappointingly and only three will carty the day because the first turn, comes at about the - end of a furlong runners which make it in the . leading bunch are the ones most likely to be in at the finish. Speed to Burn Dynamite has speed to burn for a middle-distance runner so he will probably be prominent in spite of having the outside at the start. At his runners, Somerset Fair and the three-year-olds. Otara and Barobar, are expected to contest the £l5OO Somerset Fair and Barobar each have many admirers and there are some who fancy Otara. So an interesting race is on the card. Since 1945, when the running of the race was resumed after a break during the war years, many great gallopers have won the King’s Plate. Somerset Fair entered the list when he won in 1954 at three years. If he is successful again he will be the fifth to win twice since the event was started in 1923. The others, Aussie, Cuddle, Sir Beau, and Red Jester, won in successive years. Between them Somerset Fair. Otara, and Barobar have won 10 races this season. A filly, Barobar will carry 7-11, Otara has 8-2, and Somerset Fair 9-2. Second Leg The second leg of the double will be the Waitemata Handicap, run over a mile and three furlongs, for horses in the hack class. The form runners are Black Wren, Great Scot, Sky Warrior, Contact, Victory, and Lady Janice. Softening of the ground may be against Black Wren, which likes it firm. Great Scot ran a mile and a quarter impressively for success at his last start at Avondale last Saturday when Contact Victory finished well in fifth place. He meets Great Scot on 7Jlb better terms this. time and ft should be enough to make him a formidable opponent. The Stratford visitor, Domitare lost his chance through a slow beginning in the Railway Handicap on the first day and he may show im-. orovement against a small field in the oF>en sprint, the Electric Handicap. Domitare is favourably placed at the start at No. 2, and he looks in winning condition.
