New British Missiles
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, Dec. 26. A major' expansion to help speed up Britain’s guided weapons programme is under way at Aberporth, Cardiganshire, where flight testing of guided missiles is carried out. A new bank of launching platforms will allow more launchings to be carried out each day and greater advantage to be taken of the brief fine weather spells invaluable for testing. Within an enclosure of steel fences an area of some 250 acres is dotted with square concrete or
brick buildings, weird radar antennae and the gaunt skeletons of the launching ramps. Three aircraft firms working on missiles are at present working on ground-to-air missiles which will form the basis of British anti-aircraft defences against bombers travelling at near sonic speeds and high altitudes.
