BOWLS CHRISTMAS TOURNEY CONTINUED IN RAIN

Had an enterprising salesman of plastic raincoats called yesterday on any or all of the six greens being used for the Christchurch Bowling Centre’s Christmas fours tournament he would certainly have done some profitable business.

The players reported to their respective greens at 9 a.m. to start play on the second day of the tournament. They were a little doubtful whether there would be ai\y play because of steady rain, but late in the morning the rain eased off considerably and it was decided to begin play at noon. No sooner had the games started than there was a heavy shower, much to the discomfort of the players, but the games went on.

Many of those taking part in the games were not very interested in the playing of their bowls, and when their turn came to play they rolled their bowls with careless abandon, their one thought being to get back under cover as quickly as possible. In mid-afternoon the rain ceased, and for a few moments the sun showed through. Before the second game had quite finished the rain again began, and became quite heavy. Most of the players were very happy to see the last bowl rolled up, whether they had won or lost. Only two games were played yesterday and the time limit of these was reduced from two hours and a half to two hours. Three games will have to be played today before post-section play begins, and it will depend on the weather if one game of post-sec-tion is played. If only section games are played the post-section games will be played on Saturday. Hopes Dashed Many fours who had a chance of qualifying had their hopes dashed in yesterday’s unpleasant conditions when they were beaten by some very mediocre fours. Players with the less sensitive touch found that the heavy greens suited them and gave them wins against fours far superior to them. A curious game was seen between G. Orchard (Christchurch) and E. Fox (R.S.A.). Orchard went away in fine style, scoring on the first eight heads to lead 12-0. Over the next nine heads Fox scored 12, to bring the score level. When this head was nearly finished the bell went for time and an extra head had to be played. This went in favour of R.S.A., which won an unusual game, 13-12. During the afternoon’s play there were some runaway victories, and with many prominent players suffering defeat there-will be some very interesting encounters over the last three rounds.

At the end of the second day’s play there were only four fours who had won all their five games. These were F. Haworth (Beckenham), A. Taylor Christchurch). K. Murray (South Brighton), and R. Bowman (Woolston). Results: —
