DEFENCE
Sir, —“Fool’s Paradise” is indeed an apt name for New Zealand. We live here in peace and plenty, doing as little work for as much reward as possible. Over-spending on amusement, drink, gambling, cars, cosmetics, and gadgets, shutting our eyes to the horrible menace of Communist countries. We give gentle sympathy to peoples and countries devastated and tortured by a brutal enemy, feeling thankfully that that can never come here. It can come. For what is Russia building her enormous fleet of submarines except to clear the Pacific of our shipping and occupy our valuable unprotected country? Of what use are costly obsolete ships? We need powerful fighting planes, bombs, and modern weapons. Wake up New Zealand men and demand some adequate protection for your homes, wives, and children, whatever the cost. We should all be willing to forgo some of our easy living to procure safety.— Yours, etc., NO TIME TO LOSE. December 26, 1956.
