DE LESSEPS STATUE OVERTURNED.—This famous memorial to Ferdinand de Lesseps, at the Port Said entrance to the Suez Canal, has been toppled by Egyptians. A charge was lit under the monument, which crashed into a harbour barge. Inset is a portrait of de Lesseps, who directed the construction of the canal. Since 1891 the statue had been a landmark at Port Said and was familiar to countless thousands of travellers.
