TOLL TRAFFIC

No Congestion On Christmas Day

Although the public did not co-operate to the extent desired on Christmas Day, the toll operators in Christchurch were able to have their Christmas dinner without many interruptions. The Post Office had appealed to the public not to make toll calls on Christmas Day between noon and 2 p.m., but a large number ot calls were made in that period. The problem was solved by recording the calls and putting most of them through after 2 p.m. Although 120 calls were waiting to be put through at 2 p.m., there was no congestion, and all the calls had been made by 2.40 p.m. The exchange had a very busy period after 8 a.m. Many persons made calls to exchanges which normally open before 8 a.m., and these all had to be cleared as soon as the exchanges opened. However, except with traffic to some exchanges near Auckland, there were no delays.
