INCREASE IN FARES Increases between 6d and Is wiU come into force on January 6 for many New Zealand Railways Road Service bus routes in Canterbury, Otago and Southland. The increases have been approved by the Commissioner of Transport (Mr H. B. Smith). Twelve-trip concessions which formerly gave a reduction of 15 per cent, on ordinary fares now give a cut of 12| per cent. The Christchurch-Ashburton fare has been increased by 9d to 10s. Trips to Akaroa will cost 11s instead of 10s 6d. The Christchurch-Governors Bay run will cost 2s 6d a trip and weekly tickets will be 18s 6d instead of 16s. One of the largest increases is on the fare from Christchurch to Amberley which has risen from 4s 3d to 5s 6d. Fares for workers’ weekly concession tickets between Temuka and Timaru will be Is 9d dearer at 15s and concession rates from Geraldine to Timaru have risen by 2s to 26s for a 10-trip ticket. Prices to Timaru,. Dunedin and Hanmer Springs will remain unchanged. School children’s concessions have been worked at :’d a mile, with a minimum charge of 3d. They will increase to Id a mile for the first 10 miles and Sd a mile for more than 10 miles. The minimum charge has not been changed.
