RETAIL PRICE OF PETROL
INCREASE DENIED BY OIL EXECUTIVES (From Out Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, December 23. A rumour that the price of petrol would be increased by Is a gallon from tomorrow was denied by officials of several oil companies tonight. “I have heard nothing of it, nor, I am sure, has anyone else in my company." said Mr W. H. Greenbank, secretary of the British Petroleum Company, when he was asked about the rumour, which circulated freely in Christchurch today. Mr Greenbank said that the statement recently made on behalf of the oil companies put the matter in its right perspective. As the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr E. H. Halstead) had said, the recent rise, of 3d a gallon had been made to avoid a probable later rise of 7d because of the higher cost of tanker charters. ‘‘lf another rise was intended, it would have to go through the Cabinet.” he said. “So far as I am aware, this has not happened, nor is it intended You may treat this one as just a rumour.”
