ASHBURTON CUP MEETING

Lucky Hall Should Race Well LIGHT NURSE MIGHT BE FAVOURED . Lucky Hall, which led all the way and won. by four lengths over two miles at Addington last month at his most recent start, is selected to win the £l5OO Ashburton Cup, the main handicap and first leg of the double at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s summer meeting on Wednesday. Lucky Hall will be bracketed with Belle Renarde and this will result in much stronger support for him than if he was on his own. Belle Renarde has not raced since she won the Flying Mile Handicap at Addington on November 24. Her previous form at the cup meeting was high and she should not be troubled to run out a solid two miles. Most opposition to S. A. Edwards’s bracket will probably come from Light Nurse, which looked desperately unlucky to be beaten a nose by Kingsdown Direct in the President’s Handicap at New Brighton on December 1. The Light Brigade mare is a grand stayer and will only need to receive a reasonable run to be the hardest to beat. Cembala, which is raced by Messrs A. M. and R. J. Bruce, two stewards of the Ashburton club, will be in demand following his fourth in the President’s Handicap at New Brighton. That was his first start for about 18 months, and it is expected that he will now be a much fitter horse. Lady Shona has raced most consistently this season and she could easily win. She has more ability than most in the race. She will be bracketed with the disappointing Starbeam. Con Scott and Invicta both failed at their last starts. However, before that they had shown useful form and they will not be without prospects on Wednesday. Glint, Ricochet, and Kingsdown Direct are others expected to be solidly supported, but they should be safely held by Lucky Hall and Light Nurse. Selections are:— 11.15 a.m.—Micham Handicap: Silent Jim, Indiana, San Jacinto. Noon—Wakanui Handicap: First Division: Wainoni Loyal, Shemara, Auditor. Second Division: Maharaja, Bentley, High Mark. 12.50 p.m.—Asburton Cup: Lucky Hall, Light Nurse, Cembala. 1.35 p.m.—McLean Handicap: Skydale, Twill, Chupra. 2.20 p.m.—Midsummer Handicap: Dignus, Kyle Nurse, Reason Why. 3 p.m.—New Zealand Champidn Stakes: Bon Ton, Gentry, Overdrive. 3.45 p.m.—Winslow Handicap: Unlikely, Native Cord, Royal Mile. 4.30 p.m.—Boxing Day Handicap: Gold Direct, Straight Eight, La Mignon.
