CYCLING HARRIS BEATEN BY SHAW

Sprint Events At English Park

CHAMPION NOT UP TO FORM

Colin Shaw, the South Australian cyclist, really found his form at English Park on Saturday night, when he beat the four times world champion. Reg. Harris, in two out of three sprints. Harris was not in top form. Flying to New Zealand last week precluded him from training. As well, in Honolulu, he was badly sunburned, and this had not cleared on Saturday. The Mayor, Mr R. M. Macfarlane. M.P., who officially opened the meeting, congratulated the Christchurch and Hornby cycling clubs on the initiative shown in bringing Harris to< Christchurch. The main event was the 500-metre sorint and in the elimination heats Harris beat J. Wildermoth and Shaw beat R Lucas. Harris and Shaw met in three sprints to find the winner in the best two out of three, and in the first sprint Harris took the front and at the end of the front straight Harris stood still on his cycle and kept Shaw at the back. Harris was then well up on the track with his front wheel facing the running fence, and seeing this, Shaw shot down inside and made a break of about three lengths on Harris, but the long sprint suited Harris, who rode very fast to win by a narrow margin.

In the second sprint, Shaw took the front and kept Harris tight up against the running fence. Entering the back straight, Shaw cut down smartly in front of Harris and kept him on the outside. In the back straight, both riders were equal but Shaw won by half a wheel. In the final sprint, Shaw used similar tactics and won by a similar margin. Shaw was decorated with a garland by the wife of the Christchurch Cycling Club’s president (Mrs R. H. Harrison) and when he rode the victor’s lap he received a tremendous ovation from the crowd.
