ATHLETICS Valerie Sloper Breaks Provincial Discus Record

Even after almost a fortnight’s rest following her Olympic Games competition, Miss Valerie Sloper continued her record-breaking feats at the inter-club athletic competitions at Rugby Park on Saturday, when she made her first competitive appearance since returning from Melbourne. This time it was with the discus instead of the shot and her best throw of 129 ft lOin added ll|in to her own Canterbury record made last year. It was not her best throw with the discus, however, for she threw 130 ft at Ensor’s road on October 6 and 130 ft lin at Waikari late last season, but no application was made for a record because of a fault in the ground levels.

Miss Sloper was also an easy winner of the shot put with 46ft sin. which although nearly 4ft short of her best performance of 50ft 3in made at Melbourne, was only 2Jin behind the distance that last season gained her nomination for the Games team. The Olympic marathon runner, A. W Richards, ran steadily to win the 20-mile road race from the only other starter, F. Sharpe, who had a 12min start. Recording Ihr 58min 3sec, Richards recorded almost the same time for each of the five-mile laps. Fast Quarter-Miie

In the senior A grade 440 yards, T. I. Crossen (University) recorded the fastest time for the season, 50.8 sec, which was O.lsec better than his previous best. Although tired and slowing finishing into the wind, Crossen ran most impressively. An outstanding middle-distance runner as a junior, Crossen did not improve as expected, but if he continues the progress he has shown in this half of the season he will be a very strong candidate for both the quarter and half-mile races at the Canterbury senior championships.

Potentially one of the best distance runners in the province, J. K. Macdonald (University) gave the first indication that he is approaching competition in a serious manner when he raced away from the senior mile field over the last two laps to record 4min 21sec—the fastest time of the season.

J. C. Daly (Marist) took the field to the half-mile at almost a level pace in 2min lOsec. Increasing the speed in the third lap, Macdonald rapidly established a big lead and J. Kyle (Marist), who had some difficulty in getting round the field, came through for second place but was never in a position seriously to challenge Macdonald.

Miss F. Mcßeath (Toe H’s), who has monopolised the woman’s A grade half-mile races this season, had an easy win in the 440 yards. She was timed at 60.4 sec. Although she has a short stride. Miss Mcßeath runs with an excellent rhythm and it will be interesting to see if her times over the quarter-mile improve when she is opposed by stronger opposition.

Now in his first year of senior competition, the Toe H sprinter, L. Jones, won the senior A grade 100 yards by several yards in 10.2 sec.
