FRIGATES SAIL FOR SOUTH
CREWS BEGIN GROWING BEARDS (From Our Own Reporter) ABOARD H.M.N.Z.S. HAWEA. December 21. When the frigates Pukaki and Hawea sailed from Dunedin for the south late this afternoon, the -ship’s company of the Pukaki were ahead of the Hawea’s men in one respect—more than 70 of them had sought and been granted permission to grow beards. Most of them were already sprouting two or three days’ growth of beard. Only seven men aboard the Hawea have asked for similar permission. The Royal New Zealand Navy regulations provide that, if within three months the beard and moustache do not satisfy the commanding officer of the ship, he will order both to be shaved off.
It is likely that most of the beards grown on the present voyage will be shaved off a day before the ships return to New Zealand.
