SURFERS IN HIGH SEAS

Very high seas and gale force winds which caused the abandonment of the Canterbury Surf Life-Saving Association’s events at Taylor’s Mistake last Sunday did not deter several of Canterbury's leading surfers from pitting their strength against the elements. After the meeting had been abandoned an impromptu surf race was organised. In this race, the New Zealand senior and junior champions. P. Garratt and B. Robertson, and W. Pasley managed to battle their way out to the marker buoys, but most of the others were unable to compete against the towering waves, and returned to shore. In similar conditions, surfmen used surf skis in a race. F. Hilton, T. Pasley. E. Dasler. and P. Stead successfully reached the buoys and provided a moderate crowd with plenty of thrills.
