ATHLETICS
N.Z. VISIT BY GORDON PIRIE (New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, Dec. 21. Gordon Pirie, the British distance runner, may appear at the summer games in Palmerston North, which wall begin on January 19. He has accepted accommodation which has been obtained for him in the Wanganella. This information has just been received by the Palmerston North public relations officer (Mr E. G. Beckett). The ship will arrive at Wellington on January 7. Pirie recently wrote to Mr Beckett expressing regret at being unable to obtain air transport from Australia in time for the games in Palmerston North. He has been invited to stay in Palmerston North for a week as the guest of the public relations organisation.
The organisation has been pressing for a cinder track, and the Mayor (Mr W. B. Tennent) has called for a report from the council staff on an improved type of running track for the Memorial Park. It is known that Pirie, who is anxious to train New Zealand athletes to international standard, favours a cinder track.
