ST. MICHAEL’S CHURCH
Special Service To
Be Held
PART IN DIOCESAN HISTORY
To commemorate the part played in the history of the Diocese of Christchurch by St. Michael’s Church, a special service will be held there tomorrow evening. The preacher will be the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren)
The first Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt Rev. H. J. C. Harper) was enthroned in St. Michael's Church, which thus became the pro-Cathedral. The building of St. Michael's Church was begun in Maj’ oi June, 1851, and on July 20 the church, which stood on approximately the present site, was opened. It was then called “the Church of Christchurch.” It was known as St. Michael’s Church when, in November, 1855. Bishop Selwyn called the meeting at which it was decided that his friend, the Rev. H. J. C. Harper, should oecome the first Bishop of Christchurch.
