Rain Douses Bushfires
(Rec. 11 p.m.) SYDNEY. Dec. 21. Rain. th. first for 11 days, ended the bush fire danger in and around Sydney this afternoon. It poured down on great bush fires raging in three pentres, prevented dozens of homes from being destroyed, and probably saved the lives of people
trapped in one township. Fire-fighters, many of whom had been without sleep for three days, cheered and threw their hats in the air as sudden downpours put an end to the flames.
Earlier today, rising temperatures and increasing wind created fresh dangers at East Minto, 30 miles southeast of Sydney. Many homes were threatened, people were surrounded by fire and trapped. An elderly couple overcome by smoke were rescued by police.
