Drop In British Imports
LONDON, December 20. The closure of the Suez Canal caused a drop in Britain’s imports out the export rate for November was the highest ever recorded, accorJhng to B° ar d of Trade figures published today. Sterling imports, largelv from countries east of Suez, fell by £2om from October. But the fall would have been even greater but for increased imports fiom Australia which rose to £22m. Io per cent, above the average 1956 monthly figure. There was an overall drop oi £14.500.000 from non-sterling countries. but dollar area imports rose j bj £6.500.000 over the last two months. In spite of the requisitioning ot merchant shipping to help out during the Suez emergency, exports passed the record established in October. The figure for November was £291.900.000. Dollar earning exports stood at £sl.ooo.ooo—exceeded only in May. i
