CRICKET PLUNKET SHIELD TEAM
P. G. HARRIS APPOINTED VICE-CAPTAIN
The St. Albans captain and New Zealand batsman, P. G. Z. Harris. was appointed vice-captain of the Canterbury Plunket Shield team at a meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Cricket Association last evening.
The secretary (Mr I. A. Baxter) reported that already there were more than 100 applicants for the ground membership scheme, producing ‘more than £3OO in subscriptions, a figure which could be regarded as eminently satisfactory for a scheme so recently launched. Mr Baxter said that the ground membership scheme would be further advanced by the sale of tickets at Lancaster Park.
A sub-committee was appointed to make final arrangements for the tour of Nelson, Blenheim, and Greymouth.
After the meeting the Canterbury Umpires' Association was entertained by the committee. Other guests included two life members of the Canterbury Cricket Association, Messrs T. W. C. Tothill and W. J. V. Hamilton, and the captain of the Plunket Shield team, R. T. Dowker. The president of the association (Mr C. G. Crawford) said that the association appreciated the job umpires did for cricket. Theirs was a difficult task, but it meant much to the game.
The president of the Umpires’ Association (Mr W. Barnes) said umpires were prepared to do their best, and to aim at making a better job of it as they went along. They were, he said, big enough to take references to their deficiencies in sight. Some of their wives thought they were “cuckoo" to stand out in the middle from 10.45 a.m. to 6 p.m., but they enjoyed it.
