SALE OF LIQUOR

Sir,—The secretary of the Grand prix Association /bemoans the fact that the Ardmore contest has been refused a liquor licence. What he calls “basic civilised amenities,” were three bars, a bottle department, and a beer-garden. At last year’s meeting three large Army trucks were used to carry away the empty beer bottles. Had they got “the amenities” it is quite sure that the amount of liquor consumed would have greatly increased, and the bottles would have gone in as before, and all risks w T ould have been doubled. Let them supply an abundance of tea and coffee, fruit juices, milk-shakes, and ice cream, and it will give them a betterbehaved crowd and one easier to control. —Yours, etc., FRED T. MILES. Ashburton. December 16, 1956.
