TRACK WORK AT WINGATUI

Trials For Meeting On Saturday

FIELD CHIEF GOES WELL “The Press’ 1 Special Service DUNEDIN, December 18.

For the second time in the last few days the Dunedin Cup top-weight. Field Chief, took the honours in the track work at Wingatui this morning. Rex Robe, Salonica, Bow Tie, Surapt. Palace and Black Star recorded attractive sprints over half a mile.

Field Chief was ridden by the apprentice, R. J. Mackie, over a mile and a quarter. He galloped strongly throughout, coming home from the seven furlongs in lmin 33 3-ssec, and had no trouble in running the last half-mile in 54sec, and the concluding three furlongs in 41 l-ssec. The track was cutting out slightly, but in the absence of further rain the going should be in splendid order for the opening of the meeting on Saturday.

The next best time for seven furlongs was recorded by another cup candidate in Lucky Bill (B. P. Kennedy), which was assisted over the journey by Armando (R. J. Mackie). They ran the distance in lmin 34 2-ssec, and came home strongly over the last three furlongs in 42sec. The Sponsor (M. Houliston) drifted from the home turn, and was well back at the finish.

Landon, ridden by his cup jockey, L. W. Hare, ran very evenly throughout seven furlongs to record lmin 35 3-ssec. His companion, Vocalize (G. A. Campbell) was of no use to him in the run home, when he completed his task by covering the last three furlongs in 41 3-ssec. Finished Strongly

Horatius (S. Harrington) easily accounted for Cashmere (D. McLaren) in lmin 36sec, the concluding three furlongs in 43 l-ssec. Cashmere forced the early pace, but Horatius finished strongly on the outside to take the lead running to the post. Cocos (B. Blair), By Jove (R. J. Mackie) and Hearth Rug (R. Fraser) had little between them in an easy run in lmin 40sec, the first half-mile in 56sec. St. Ninian (B. J. Aanderton) was given a similar task in lmin 41sec, after taking 57sec for the opening halfmile. The Wanderer (B. J. Anderton), Mitre Peak (H. T. Anderton), Bobwood (R. J. Skelton), Prince Ermine <B. P. Kennedy), and Meridian (M. Blair) were together at the end of six furlongs in lmin 22 4-ssec, the first two furlongs in 25 4-ssec. King Gus (K. Hooper) was doing his best work over the early stages of his trial by running the first three furlongs in 39 3-ssec, and completing the journey in lmin 25 2-ssec. Copperfield (L. W. Hare), and Bonniboy (R. J. Mackie) ran five furlongs and finished together in lmin 7 3-ssec, the first two furlongs in 26 2-ssec. Gallant Peter (G. E. Lowry) was a length too good for Richmel (G. A. Campbell) in lmin Bsec, the last three furlongs in 42sec. This time was equalled by Irish Wings (L. W. Hare), the last three furlongs in 41 4-ssec, and Algiers (E. Sutherland) and Roi D’Amour (J. Didham), which came home together in 43 2-ssec. Has Freshened Up

Palace, ridden by his trainer, D. Dawson, dashed over half a mile in 51 3-ssec, the last three furlongs in 39 l-ssec. The Super gelding appears to have freshened up since he raced at Invercargill last month. Salonica (R. J. Mackie) showed speed to finish clear of Peril (A. I. Powell) at the end of half a mile in 51 4-ssec, the last three furlongs 3B 4-ssec. Salonica is a light-weight candidate for the Mornington Hack Handicap.

Ma Reine (J. Didham) was not out for time in 53 4-ssec, the opening furlong in 12 3-ssec, and her stable mate. Exodus (A. N. Didham) was given an easy run in 55sec, the first furlong in 13sec. Tamrin (R. J. Skelton) was not asked for his best in 53 l-ssec, the opening furlong in 12 3-ssec. Love Scheme (S. Robertson) equalled this time after running the first furlong in 13sec. Cadillac (R. J. Mackie) had a length

to spare from Frances Burn (M. Houliston) in 55 2-ssec, the first furlong in 12 4-ssec. Bow Tie (R. J. Mackie) and Surapt (B. Blair) were together over half a mile in 52 2-ssec. They ran the opening furlong in 12sec, and did their work well. Well Prepared Flying Doctor (B. Blair) and Master David (R. J. Mackie) dashed over the last three furlongs of their half-mile task in 40 3-ssec. Both these horses have come through a sound preparation on the roads and hills. Red Admiral (E. Sutherland) completed a round of pace work by sprinting home the last three furlongs in 40 l-ssec.

From a barrier start at the halfmile Rex Robe (B. J. Anderton) had too much pace for a field of maiden gallopers when he ran the distance in 51sec, the opening furlong in 12 l-ssec. The Trek (R. J. Skelton), King Cassock <G. E. Lowry), Birthday News (B. P. Kennedy), Richmel (S. Roberton) and Night Vision (H. T. Anderton) finished behind him in that order, and they were clear of several other runners.

Black Star (R. J. Skelton) and Sea Buoy (H. T. Anderton) were the best of the two-year-olds which were given a similar task. Black Star finished well to take a narrow dedision in 51 2-ssec, the first furlong in 13sec. Useful pace tasks were recorded by Master Ascot, Winning Wave, Red Tinge, Ettrick John, Flying Symbol, Eden’s Pride, Field Dress, Beau Lad, Netherhall, Lochie, Royal Way, Full Circle, Nicastro and Larboard Watch.
