Atlantic Storms Lash Shipping

(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 16. Several ships were in difficulties in storms lashing the North Sea and Atlantic ocean off the coast of Britain today. Nine Dutch tugs put out to help the new 24,300-ton Dutch liner, Statendam, adrift in the North Sea in a raging storm after she developed engine trouble during pre-christening trials. Several tugs took the liner in tow. She is expected to reach Rotterdam tomorrow morning. The 7176-ton Liberian ship, National Leader, in the mid-Atlantic, northwest of the Azores, reported today that her engines had broken down, and asked for immediate tug assistance. The ocean-going tug, Turmoil, today reached the 4497-ton Finnish steamer, Petsamo, adrift in the Atlantic with a steering gear breakdown. The ship, with her crew of 35, was drifting towards the Irish coast. The 3700-ton British freighter, Baron Cawdor, had been fighting an Atlantic gale 200 miles off Ireland for two days, the “Daily Express” reported. On Saturday, the crew was standing by her lifeboats. Her position improved and an air-sea rescue Shackleton aircraft sent to her aid was recalled.
