INVITATION TO TITO

Possibility Of U.S. Visit

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) WASHINGTON, December 17.

President Eisenhower may invite President Tito of Jugoslavia to pay a State visit to the United States next year, it was reported today. Highly placed diplomatic sources said that such a visit had been under serious consideration for some time.

A Washington dispatch to the “New York Times” today said that President Eisenhower planned to send an invitation to Belgrade “shortly,” unless some unforeseen development drastically changed the East European situation. A senior Jugoslav Embassy official refused either to confirm or deny the report, but he said: “This would be big news.” In view of the contemplated visit, the “New York Times” report said that it was indicated in Washington last night that President Eisenhower would permit resumption of shipments of military equipment, including jet planes, to Jugoslavia.

“Information available indicated that announcement of the resumption of deliveries of jet planes would >be timed to precede the announcement of the invitation or held up to coincide with the visit itself,” the “New York Times” dispatch said.
