UNLUCKY VISITOR TO OLYMPICS
ONEHUNGA MAN BROKE PELVIS IN FALL (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 16. Mr Frank Lipscombe. of Onehunga, who fell from a tree and broke his pelvis on the opening day of the Melbourne Olympic Games, is home again. “I saved up for two years to go to the Games,” he said ruefully yesterday. “This was my first visit to Australia, and I went as a member of a 12-man party from the Onehunga Athletic Club. “We had tickets for every event but the opening day. Determined to see and photograph the New Zealanders, I scaled a tree just outside Richmond Park. Then I fell—fortunately without hitting anyone on the way down. I broke my pelvis—but not my spectacles nor camera. Mr Lipscombe spent the rest of his Melbourne stay in St. Vincent’s Hospital, Richmond. There with him were some athletes who were injured in Games events. “The Australians’ hospitality was terrific,” he said. “People who didn't know me sent fruit, or wrote offering
accommodation.” Happy to be home for Christmas, Mr Lipscombe will not be able to walk for three weeks, nor resume work on his milk round until March.
