SURF LIFE-SAVING NEW BRIGHTON CLUB
CARNIVAL SEAS TOO ROUGH FOR , SWIMMERS High winds ahd a very heavy surf forced the Canterbury Surf Association to cancel all swimming events at its first carnival yesterday. The venue was first changed from South Brighton to Taylor’s Mistake, where sea conditions were a little better, but difficulty was experienced in setting buoys and very few of the competitors could get through the heavy seas. Only the resuscitation for the senior and junior four-man alarm championships and the first race for the senior surf canoe championship were held. The remainder of the events will be decided at a date to be arranged later in the season. In the surf canoe event, Waimairi was the only club to get a canoe out through the rough surf, and the crew had to stand well out to sea before they could turn and come in. The other two craft from North Beach and South Brighton were swamped in the early stages of the race. Commencing on Thursday, the following patrolmen will be on duty at the beaches during the school vacation:— Waimairi, D. Stewart: North Beach, B. Armstrong; South Brighton, C. Claxton; Sumner, N Webb; Taylor’s Mistake, R. Sharman. An appointment has still to be made for New Brighton. The hours of duty will be from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m. on ordinary working days. Clubs will maintain patrols on public holidays and at week-ends.
