NEW FUELS AND EXPLOSIVES

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) BOSTON, Dec. 11. Admiral Arleigh Burke, Chief of United States Naval Operations, said today that new chemical fuels being developed would result in a 40 per cent, increase in power for the missiles and planes of the future.

He also disclosed that a new high explosive had been developed which produced a 25 per cent, increase in the blast effect of conventional bombs. Another scientific advance, he said, has brought about a 50 per cent, energy increase in the effectiveness of mines and torpedoes for undersea warfare.

In a speech before the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Admiral Burke listed these developments as indicative of the gains that had been made in the search for lighter and more effective weapons.

The chemical fuels are believed to use light metal hydrides, such as boron or lithium, mixed‘in a hydrocarbon fuel base.
