Commercial Atomic Power In U.S.
(Rec. 7 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Dec. 11. Mr Lewis Strauss, chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, said today that he was recommending that steps be taken without delay to assure the construction by not later .than June 30. 1962. of at least two additional large-scale and three additional smallscale power reactors.
He said that private industry would be given the first chance to build the reactors, which would be of entirely new type and design. Mr Strauss has been engaged in a dispute with Democratic members of the Congressional Atomic Energy Committee who claim that the United States is lagging behind Britain and other countries in development of commercial atomic power. The five new reactors would be in addition to 18 plants to come into operation by 1962.
