Mrs J. R. Pollock, of Mildura, Australia, formerly Miss Enid Roy Smith, has completed her B.A. degree at Melbourne University, according to cabled advice received by her parents, Mr and Mrs J. Roy Smith, of Fendalton. Women who participated in the New Zealand Red Cross “Knit-a-Peggy Square” competition last May will be glad to know that they have helped to relieve the suffering of many Hungarians. The Red Cross advises that it»has made up hundreds of blankets from the thousands of - peggy squares and that a large number of these blankets have been shipped to the London headquarters of the Red Cross and from there they will be transported to Hungary. Members of the Sacred Heart Past ; Pupils’ Association attended an enjoyable Christmas party at Elizabeth House. The president of the association (Mrs A. Aspell) welcomed a large attendance. A programme, arranged by Mrs Merle Carter in-! eluded songs by Mrs Bradley and, Misses Beryl Gough, Veronica Costi- | gan, and Shona Carey. Violin solos: were played by Mr H. M. McCutcheon ' and ’cello solos by Miss Frances Anderson. Candlelight carol singing concluded the evening. The only son of a former GovernorGeneral of New Zealand has announced his engagement in London. He is Captain the Hon. Francis Storer Eaton Newall, 11th Hussars (Prince Albert’s Own), only son of Marsnal of the Royal Air Force Lord Newall and Lady Newall, of The Old Hundred, Tormanton, near Badminton, Gloucestershire. His fiance is Miss Pamela Elizabeth Rowecliffe eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Hugh Rowecliffe, of Pinkey Park, Malmesbury, Wiltshire. Captain Newall was in New Zealand when his father, then Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Cyril Newall, was Governor-General from 1941 to 1946.

Arrangements for the silver jubilee celebrations were outlined at the December meeting of the Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes. Presidents of the various institutes were present at the morning session, by special invitation. Mrs Pattison welcomed the president of the newly formed institute at Lyttelton (Mrs Green) and she thanked all those who had supported the appeal for the blind hostel. Mrs Mauger was appointed to take charge of a show of work at the jubilee. It was arranged to visit Springfield Institute in February Thirty-three presidents were present and apologies were received from the Le Bon's Bay, Mairehau. Te Pirita and Lake Coleridge institutes. The Christmas party of the Hoon Hay branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers was held recently when Mrs Keith presided Visitors and members were presented with posies on entering the hall and an enjoyable programme of competitions and items was given by members of the local branch. Mrs Keith presented the Christmas cake.

The Papanui Garden Club held a Christmas party at the home of Mr and Mrs W. Burns, Papanui road, when members and their friends were welcomed by the president (Mrs R. L. Sparrow). The guests of honour were Mr and Mrs J. R. Templin and Mr and Mrs P. C. Browne. Mr Sparrow showed coloured slides taken on his tour of England and the Continent. The patron (Mrs A. Nettleton) proposed a vote of thanks. During supper a large Christmas cake, made and given by Mrs Nettleton, was cut by Mrs Templin. Competitions resulted: floral cocktail hat: Mrs L. Courer 1, Mrs H. de R. Flesher 2, Mrs K. Nicholls 3; rose, Mrs Patterson 1, Mrs Flesher 2, Mrs Wilson 3; best bloom. Mrs Selby 1. More than 160 members and guests were present at the Papanui-Merivale Plunket Mothers’ Club Christmas and birthday party held recently in the Returned Services’ Hall at Papanui. Mrs H. E. Keys welcomed Mesdames Ferrier, Bennett, Sullivan and Sister Anderson as well as guests from Rangiora, Brooklands, Addington and Opawa clubs. The Christmas stocking was won by Mrs R. Dwyer, a Christmas cake by Mrs Newall and apron by Mrs S. McNeill. The artists who provided the entertainment were Mesdames Davies, Spencer-Corrick and members of the club. A total of £42 was ' raised at an auction of goods by the Central Plunket Mothers’ Club held recently. The sale consisted mainly of articles made by the members which would be suitable for Christmas gifts.
