WATER SHORTAGE IN WAIMATE

RESTRICTION ON USE OF HOSES

Waimate householders were'warned on Saturday evening to “turn off all taps.” A car containing a loudspeaker system made a tour of the borough when it was found that the level of water in the reservoir was dangerously low. Demands on storage made it necessary on Friday to restrict hosing of gardens to the period between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. In spite of this, the level fell on Saturday to a mark which dangerously reduced pressure for fire-fighting. “There was a slight gain during Saturday night, but only half the improvement that should have been made,” the borough foreman (Mr S. F. Woods) said yesterday after inspection of the reservoir. “By tonight the level will probably fall to what it was before; and that is not good enough. More co-operation is needed.” Mr Woods said there was a full supply of water to the reservoir. The trouble was the exceptionally heavy, draw-off by consumers.
