SHARPIE CLASS AT OLYMPICS

POSSIBLE DELETION FROM GAMES (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 12. The Olympic gold medal won by the Christchurch yachtsmen P. G. Mander and J. U. Cropp may be the last awarded for the 12-square metre class at an Olympic yachting contest. Following a recent decision of the International Yacht-Racing Union, the world yachting body, the Sharpie class is unlikely to be chosen for the 1960 Olympics at Rome. This decision was mentioned today by Mr James McGruer, British designer and a member of the I.Y.R.U. technical committee, who is visiting Auckland after acting as an official at the Melbourne Olympics. The 5.5 metre, Dragon, Star and possibly the Finn class monotype yachts will be retained for the 1960 Games. If the Sharpie is dropped, and this seems very likely, it might be replaced by either the 505 class or the Flying Dutchman. Mr McGruer said that the international 14-footer might also be considered for the Olympics. There was also a chance that an extra yachting class might be introduced into the Olympic contest. This is likely to be the 6-metre class, which raced at the 1948 and 1952 Olympics, but was not selected for Melbourne.
