Miss Bessie Langley Heighten, of Christchurch, who recently sent a collection of verses she had written to Princess Alexandra, has had a reply from the Princess’s lady-in-waiting. The final gathering for the year of the Christchurch Cultural Society took the form of a conversazione on Saturday evening at the Canterbury Women’s Club. Members of the council decorated the lounge with large containers of roses and mixed flowers. Mrs Grace Blair sang, accompanied by Mrs W. E. Olds, and piano solos were played by Miss Barbara Collins. Members of the St. Margaret's College Old Girls’ Association, at their annual meeting last evening, stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of Miss Davina Bates, who died recently. Miss Bates was a member of the association. t The president of the Royal Empire Society (Mr R. R. Livingstone) and Mrs Livingstone, and members of the council held “At Home” in the garden of Elizabeth House on Saturday afternoon. They had as their guest Miss Jean McKenzie. Incidental music was played by Mrs Tolmie (piano) and Miss Romolo Griffiths (violin). A feature of the afternoon was several ballets danced in the sunken rose garden by the pupils of Miss Gladys Bushell.

More than 50 members of the Christchurch Girls’ High School Old Girls’ Association attended a reunion and annual meeting, held recently at “Acland,” Papanui road. Officers were elected as follows: —Patron, Miss Merton; president. Mrs K. Arnaud: vice-presidents. Mrs A. D. Allan and Miss L. Leaman; secretary. Miss M. J. Fechney; assistant-secretary. Miss F. Rodger; committee, Mesdames G. Freeman, C. Kennedy, M. Maples, K. Tweedie, and Miss Rae Bowman.

• Mrs A. Matheson presided at the final meeting for the year of the year circle of the Canterbury Women’s Club. A musical programme arranged by Mrs H. Wilson was presented. The artists. Mesdames A. Ledsham, Stewart and Grieves, gave vocal solos and duets. Mrs Wilson accompanied the soloists and also gave piano solos.

Mrs J. Fowler presided at the recent Christmas party of the Riccarton Townswomen’s Guild. Mrs C. Plum ridge, the Dominion president of the federation, and representatives of ah the other Christchurch guilds were guests. Mrs D. Pashby entertained with humorous recitations, and Mrs F Hanham and Mrs J. Gilmore sang duets. The Hillsborough Women’s Institute choir, conducted by Miss Pauline Colthart presented songs, sketches and carols. Mrs Plumridgc cut the Christmas cake, which hao been made and iced by Mrs C. Fisher assisted by Mrs F. Hanham.

Floral art was Remonstrated by Mrs J. Moffat and Mrs Wiseman at the monthly meeting of the Somerfield Garden Club. The award for the premier exhibit was made to Mrs Rickerby. Competitions resulted: decorative, a bowl of roses, class A, Mrs M. Wilson 1. Mrs Rickerby 2; class B. Mrs Gibb 1. Mrs Collett 2. Mrs Hardie 3; novice, Mrs Dunmill 1.
