POLL ON COUNTY MERGER
SCHEME REJECTED
Polls were held in the Ashley, Eyre, and Kowai counties on a proposal to amalgamate those counties with the Rangiora county and to dissolve the Waimakariri and Ashley Water Supply Board. No poll was sought by the Rangiora County Council. Details of the voting were:— Ashley.—- For. 69; against. 111. * Eyre.— For, 227; against, 256. Kowai.— For. 118; against, 390. As the Local Government Commission Act. 1953, says that effect is not to be given to the proposal if not less than 60 per cent, of the valid votes recorded are against it. the poll was carried in Eyre county and lost in the Kowai and Ashley counties.
