Courtenay A. And P. Show Sets A High Standard

The Courtenay Agricultural and Pastoral Association held its eightyfirst annual show at its grounds at Kirwee on Saturday in fine weather There was a large attendance. Although entries were slightly lower than the previous year, the quality in most of the sections was good The grand parade was led by the president of the association (Mr T. D. Macartney), the senior vice-president (Mr D. H. Penney), and the junior vice-president (Mr M. R. Voice) followed by the Ellesmere Highland* Pine Band. In congratulating both the organiser and the exhibitors, the Minister of Railways (Mr J. K. McAlpine) said that he had been coming to the show for a number of years, and he never remembered a better one. The standard of entries m the horse classes was the best the show had ever had All 20 entries in the Ayrshire section were from one exhibitor. J. Jeffries. The general standard was good, said the judge (Mr A. E. Williams), of Kaiapoi. Mr Jeffries was also very successful in the all breeds classes winning the tronhy for the best pair of females in milk, and having the best aged dairy cow, the best two-year-old heifer and the champion dairy cow The champion Ayrshire and the champion dairy cow of all breeds were fine examples of dairy cows. The reserve championship was awarded to a two-year-old heifer which showed signs of developing into a fine animal. The award for the champion Ayrshire bull was made for its age and ringcraft. The standard of entries in the Jersev section was ouite good, said the judge (Mr J. T. Prosser, of Leeston). The aeed cow champion was a particularly fine animal. There had been a big improvement both in the quality and the number of entries since he had judged at the show nreviouslv. Entries were small in the Jersey bull section, but the champion had~ some fine qualities. Winning Ponies Praised In the led light horse section, according to the judge (Mr G. D. Kelly, of Winchmore), the entries were good, and the winning ponies were capable of competing favourably in any metropo’itan show. The judge of the ponies over 13 hands (Mr W. R. A. Parsons, of Amberley) said that the standard was very good and was as high as any other country show in New Zealand, the champion and reserve champion ponies were » practically faultless animals. The riding classes, with girl riders predominating, were excellent. There were 39 entries in the dog trials, but the standard, except for the winning dog, w r as only fair, said the judge (Mr R. J. F. Barrett, of Charteris Bay). The sheep did not lend themselves to good work, as they were rather light. The leading dogs did well to handle the sheep in the manner they did. The only woman competitor. Mrs R. N. Hutton, put up a good performance, and Mr Barrett said he would like to see more women taking part in the sport. Mr K. V. Hood, of Rakaia. the judge of the Merino and Corriedale sections, said that the Corriedale entries on the whole, were good. The champion ram hogget was well woolled and had good carriage. There was very little to choose between the champion and reserve champion ewes, and the championship was awarded to the ewe in wool, as it had a good fleece. Most classes in the flock sheep section were of good quality and the animals were in good condition, said the judge (Mr J. A. G. Fulton, of Loburn).
