ROWING
INTER SECONDARY SCHOOL EIGHTS
CHRIST’S COLLEGE WINS BOTH RACES
Christ's College won the annual intersecondary school eight-oared rowing contest at Kerr’s Reach on Saturday. For the first time in the history of the contest five schools took part, and old boys from four of the schools also competed in a race. The standard of rowing by the schools was the highest seen by college crews on Kerr’s Reach. Xavier College suffered the only mishap of the day when the No. 6 rowlock broke, but even with this handicap the seven other members of the crew piuckily continued the race. They fully deserved the warm ovation they received by the large crowd present. Christ's College, St. Andrew's, and St. Bede’s contested the final. Christ’s College settled down the best of the three and took the lead from St. Andrew’s and Sb Bede J s. At the finish Christ’s College was rowing very strongly and had increased its lead to two lengths from St. Andrew’s, which was rowing better than it did in the heats. St. Bede’s, a very light and inexperienced crew, finished gamely in third place a further two lengths and a half away. A combined team from Xavier College and St. Bade's College and teams from Christ’s College. St. Andrew’s, and Christchurch Boys’ High School competed in the old boys’ race.
