SOVIET ACTIONS IN HUNGARY
PROTEST BY WELLINGTON DEMONSTRATORS
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 18. About 20 men demonstrated outside the Soviet Legation in Messines road Karori, on Friday evening, in protest against the Russian reprisals in Hungary. They went to the legation in an attempt to see the Russian Minister, but were locked out of the grounds. As the men marched to the legation two members of the staff ran down the drive and swung the large iron gates to and padlocked them. The leader of the party read out a demand for the legation to be closed, and the return to Russia of all the staff. A banner, “Free Hungary,” was jammed in the gates. The Russians warned the men that if they persisted in interfering with the gates the police would be called. “We can only assume that by refusing to see us the Minister condones all that has happened in Hungary,” said the leader of the group. A statement was pasted on the brick wall surrounding the legation and another was left in a letter box.
