MOTOR-CYCLISTS’ HELMETS

Revision Of British Specifications

REPERCUSSIONS LIKELY IN N.Z.

(Neto Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 16. Stricter safety requirements for motor-cyclists and a protective helmet standard produced by the British Standards Institute and embodied in the new Road Traffic Act in the United Kingdom are likely to have repercussions in New Zealand, which adopted the original British standard. The new standard is the result of further research work, which has shown that the impact arising from accidents to motor-cyclists occurs at the front, side, or back of the head, and not at the crown as previously assumed. The new Road Traffic Act in the United Kingdom makes it a criminal offence to sell a protective helmet of a type not approved by the Ministry of Transport, and British manufacturers are taking steps to ensure that their helmets conform to the latest standard. A meeting of the responsible New Zealand committee will be held shortly to consider the adoption of the revised British standard in lieu of the existing £Jew Zealand standard. The Standards Institute announced this today.
