WOMEN’S TOURNEY ENDS

WELLINGTON BEATEN ON FIRST INNINGS

Auckland yesterday won the Hallybur-ton-Johnstone Shield for women’s cricket, when in -the final round it beat Wellington by 103 runs on the first innings. Auckland in the week’s tournament, on the basis of eight points for an outright win. five points for a first innings win, and one point for a first innings loss, secured 18 points (an outright win and two first innings wins). At stumps on Thursday eveing, Wellington had one run without loss, but yesterday, after a first-wicket partnership which brought 90 runs, the Wellington middle batsmen collapsed and the side was dismissed for 187 runs—lo 3 less than Auckland’s first innings score of 290. Wellington followed on and had lost three wickets for 41 runs at stumps.

M. Paterson and J. Stonell, openers for Wellington, batted confidently and added 89 runs to Wellington’s overnight score before the partnership was broken. Paterson was run out after a good return from B. Duncan. Paterson made 36. Stonell batted brilliantly for her 56—punishing anything loose, and yet still taking runs off the back foot. The only other batsmen to handle the bowling were I. Lamason 31 not out. and J. McAulay 23. The most successful Auckland bowlers were J. Stevens three for 40, B. Duncan three for 41, and R. Otago Otago had its first success when it beat Canterbury by four runs on the first innings. Yesterday Canterbury carried its overnight score of 79 for four wickets to 162 in reply to Otago's first innings score of 166.

Otago did not fare so well in its second innings. The side was dismissed for 77. Canterbury, batting against time, attempted to make the necessary runs, and in the 27 minutes it had left to bat nearly succeded. Three wickets fell for 60 runs at stumps, 22 runs short of victory. Features of the day’s play were an excellent innings of 58 by the Canterbury captain. M. Rouse, and some hard hitting by the Canterbur.y openers, E. Dickson and S. McCaw, who put on 37 in 15 minutes in the second innings. Otago started its second innings badly, and at afternoon tea five wickets had fallen for only 20 runs. A good stand by L. Clough, who was not out 21, and T. Sew Hoy, who made 18. consolidated the innings a little, but the side was still dismissed for 77.

The most successful bowlers for Otago were L. Harry and B. Sinclair, who each took four wickets. For Canterbury, J. Currie and R. Dickson also took four wickets each.
