OBITUARY

MR C. H. STONYER

Mr Cyril H. Stonyer, who died recently. was connected with business and sporting circles in Christchurch throughout his career. For more than 50 years he was associated with the firm of Frank Graham and Son. He was manager of the Christchurch branch of the Commercial Union Assurance Company during the full branch control by that firm. Later he took over the business of Frank Graham and Son, and carried on sharebroking as a member of the Christchurch Stock Exchange. He was a former president of the council of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, with which he was associated for many years. He was a life member of the Christchurch Football Club, which he joined 52 years ago. and was a foundation member of its well-known Red and Black Club. He was a foundation member of the Midland Club, and a Past Master in the Masonic craft.

MR E. ARCHBOLD

Mr Ernest Archbold, a past-presi-dent of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association, and for many years a leading figure in the furniture trade, died yesterday. He was 79

Mr Archbold was born in Auckland in 1877. and after receiving his early education at Sydenham and Woolston schools, won a scholarship at the Canterbury School of Art. where he took a diploma. He was then factory manager of a lame furniture manufacturing firm in Wanganui for seven years. On returning to Christchurch. Mr Archbold, with his brother. Mr W. L. Archbold, established a furniture factory in Shakespeare mad. with a staff of one boy. In 1912 the firm moved to larsfer premises. Mr Archbo’d was a member of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association for many years, and a member of the executive of the Canterbury Employers' Association. In 1931 he was elected president of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association, and was at one time Dominion president of the Furniture Federation.

He was a member of the Christchurch Bowling Club until recently. Mr Archbold is survived by his wife and his son, Mr E. W. Archbold, of Christchurch.
