ELECTRO CHEMICAL INDUSTRY

POWER COST IN N.Z. TOO HIGH The cost of hydro-electric power in New Zealand at present is too high for the economic establishment of electro chemical and other industries using large quantities of power. This conclusion has been reached by the Council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce following the study of information supplied by Mr D. S Nicholson, a technical expert of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.

“Early in the year the Chamber was approached to take an interest in the reasons for the non-establishment in the South Island of certain industries requiring bulk supplies of electric power. Mr Nicholson came to Christchurch and discussed the matter fully with the members of the executive,’’ states the report of the Council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce to be presented to the annual meeting next week.

“Economic operation could only be achieved if such industries were built adjacent to and run in conjunction with a hydro station. One of the most important conclusions from these discussions was that the production of iron and steel in New Zealand was not only possible but most desirable,” states' the report.
