CANON AND WHIPSNADE WIN DOUBLE AT ORARI

The Washdyke-trained Canon gained his third win for the season, and his first in open company, when he decisively beat a moderate field of middle distance stayers in the President’s Handicap, principal event at the Geraldine Racing Club’s second spring meeting at Orari on Saturday. The long striding four-year-old Cassock gelding, which had finished a close fourth, less than a length from the winner, Russleigh, in the Geraldine Cup last month, raced in third position on the fence until the straight. Once into line G. W. Mein gave Canon his head and within a few strides he mastered the pacemaker, The Bruiser, and galloped away to win untested. Whipsnade, which had raced *bver middle distances at his two previous starts, made a successful return to sprinting in the Stewards’ Handicap, second leg of the double. It was the Count Rendered five-year-old’s sixth start since he won his way out of hack company at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting in June.

Whipsnades previous barrier manners had left a lot to be desired but on Saturday he began smartly, trailed Teko to the half-mile, moved through with Clarion to share the lead to the three furlongs where he opened up a gap of three lengths on the field, and held his advantage in the run home. The Canon—Whipsnade combination returned their supporters a double dividend of £59 6s 6d for £l. South Canterbury stables were represented by five winners in the galloping events, and two of these, Incredible and Whipsnade. were from the Orari stable of L. H. Pratt. The only Riccarton candidates to will were Steadfast and Princess Neptune. The totalisator on-course handled £21,318 10s, including £lBO6 on the double, compared with £19.597 10s last year, an increase of £1721. The meeting was held in overcast weather, and although there were occasional showers throughout the day the track was in good order. There was a good attendance. The winners Royal Halyard and Eastern Star were swabbed as a routine measure.

Incredible Wins Again Incredible, winner of the corresponding event on the course last month, again proved too good for his rivals in the Temuka Hack and Hunters’ Hurdles, winning by three lengths from the win favourite, King O’ Day, after leading over the last mile and a half. Escalado was four lengths back in third place, 10 lengths in front of his bracketed mate, Jolly Miller. Macduff the only other runner to complete the ccurse was beaten off, another six lengths bask.

Gay King led into the first flight at which he fell, leaving Incredible in front from Macduff, Chief View and King O’ Day, with six lengths to Escalado. and another two to Jolly Miller. Except that Chief View had lost his rider at the six furlongs and Macduff had drifted back after making a bad jump at the same fence the order remained unchanged down the back. Racing to the straight King O’ Day closed on the leader and these two rose to the last fence practically on terms, but Incredible drew away again inside the furlong. Wainui Stakes Steadfast, after being well back in the early running in the first division of the Wainui Stakes moved through smartly on the inner racing to the straight to follow the pacemakers, Bargain and Abou Ben Adhem into line. Bargain appeared to be holding Steadfast at the furlong, but under a hard ride the Robin Goodfellow gelding just got up to win by half a head. Rathiin, which had been handy throughout, finished on four lengths back to cut the weakening Abou Ben Adhem out of third place. Jack’s Folly was right up fifth, well clear of Scarlet Pimpernel. King Lyn was very slow away and trailed the field throughout. Kotiti, the favourite, tried to lead throughout the second division, but found the challenges of Royal Halyara and Dulcet, which had trailed to the straight, too strong. Royal Halyai'd galloped to the front at the furlong and at the post had a length and a half to spare from Dulcet, with the weakening Kotiti a length further back, six lengths clear of Brown Treasure and Secret Scorn. Teaka and Kaikuri were slow away, and Queen’s Treasure swung round at the start, taking no part in the race. •

President’s Handicap The Bruiser soon ran clear from an even start to the President’s Handicap and at the end of a furlong was closely attended by Walkova and Native King, with Bon Soir on the inside of these two, then Canon and Russleigh together, ahead of Relinquish and Patris at the rear. The order was the same passing the six furlongs, and at the half-mile The Bruiser was half a length ahead of Walkova, with a similar margin to Russleigh, which was a length clear of Bon Soir, Native King, Canon, and Relinquish practically in line, then Patris.

Passing the three, The Bruiser, Walkova, and Russleigh were abreast, clbsely followed by Canon, Native King, and Bon Soir. The Bruiser was first into line, and at the furlong and a half was two lengths clear of Canon, with Walkova dropping back. Russleigh and Native King were next, and Bon Soir and Relinquish were moving up fast wide out. with Patris coming through on the inner Canon reached the front at the furlong and ran on to win untested by three lengths from The Bruiser In a close finish for the minor placings a length back Bon Soir got third place by a head from Native King, with similar margins to Relinquish, Patris, and Russleigh. Walkova was only a length away at the rear. Close Finish Narrow margins separated the first four horses in the Gladstone Hack Handicap, with Princess Neptune getting the decision by half a neck from Barbara’s Treasure, with half a head to Looking Forward, and a similar distance to Nasib, which was closely followed by Columban, Yue Chee, Hay Time, and Tarbillon, practically in line.

Looking Forward and Barbara’s Treasure began best and shared the pace passing the half-mile from .Fanchea and Hay Time, with Tarbillon and Columban next, ahead of Princess Neptune, which was

starting a forward move on the outer. Racing to the straight. Looking Forward and Barbara’s just clear of Princess Neptune and Hay Time, with Yue Chee. Nasib. and Columban handiest of the others. There was little between Princess Neptune, Looking Forward. Barbara’s Treasure, and Nasib at the furlong, but under a hard ride the Neptune mare just got up.

Easy for Whipsnade Whipsnade put a break of three lengths on his field with three furlongs to run in the Stewards’ Handicap, and although Fulgent tried to bridge the gap to the leader in the run home, Whipsnade could not be pegged back, winning easily by two and a half lengths. Fair Summer was two lengths back third, a neck in front of Column, which came home solidly. Teko was next less than a length back and was followed in by Regardless. Swavalong, and Adversary. Adversary, Fair Summer, and Swayalong fared worst at the start. Teko was soon pacemaking from Clarion. Whipsnade, and Fulgent, with Cornflake next ahead of Column and Rio Negro. Whipsnade and Clarion moved forward to share the lead at the half-mile, two lengths clear of Teko. Fulgent, and Josudi together, then Cornflake, Rio Negro, and Column, which were just shading Fair Summer and Regardless. Swayalongwas at the rear, three lengths behind Adversary. Whipsnade had onened un a gap of three lengths on Clarion, Fulgent, and Josudi at the three furlongs, and these three were just clear of Teko and Fair Summer Clarion and Josudi dropned out early in the run home, where Fulgent. Fair Summer, and Teko were leading the chase after Whipsnade, but the Count Rendered gelding never looked likely to surrender his lead.

Favourite Beaten Eastern Star brought off a minor surprise in the Arundel Hack Handicap when she ran on strongly over the final furlong to beat the favourite. Loyal Chief, bv a length. Loyal Chief held second .nlace by a neck from the faster-finishing Port Lanvard, which was four lengths clear of De Bracey. Cuban, King Robin, and Le Roi were next to finish. Gay King set a strong pace to the halfmile.* where he was closely attended bv Loyal Chief, Eastern Star, and King Robin, with Cuban and De Bracey next. Loyal Chief reached the front soon after, and on the home turn was hotlv pursued by Eastern Star, with King Robin. Cuban, and Port Lanyard, which was improving his position qulcklv. next. Loval Chief was still clear into the straight, but Eastern Star soon had his measure and came P”-av for a comfortable win. Results:—
