MERVYN WOOD GAINS FOURTH SELECTION

BALLARAT (Victoria), October 14. The New South Wales oarsmen, the veteran Mervyn Wood and Murray Riley, gained selection for Australia’s Olympic rowing team by completely outclassing the opposition to win the double sculls in the Olympic trials on Lake Wendouree. TJiey won by three and a half lengths in 7min 23 2-ssec. This time was 23sec faster than the time taken by a Detroit pair in winning the double sculls at the recent United States trials. The win gave Wood a unique record—it will be his fourth Olympic Games. He rowed with the Australian eight in the 1936 Berlin Games, won the single sculls at London in 1948, and was second in the same event in Helsinki four years ago. Wood and Riley hold the Empire Games double sculls title.
