FIELD SERVICE SCHOLARSHIPS

FIVE CHRISTCHURCH CANDIDATES

All five Christchurch applicants for American Field Service international scholarships have been approved by the local selection committee to compete with about 200 candidates from all parts of New Zealand. They came from Rangi-ruru School, St. ?Aargaret’s College, Avonside Girls’ High School, and Christ’s College. The final group will be selected by the organisation’s headquarters in New York. These scholarships offer a year in the United States to post-primary school children, to foster international understanding. Margaret Britten, of the Christchurch Girls’ High School, recently returned after spending a year in the life of a typical American family. At present, scholarships were limited to those who could pay their own return fares to the United States, said the Christchurch representative (Mr J. M. Latham), but, with a growing Christchurch branch and increased public interest, it should be possible to raise funds to help any deserving candidate who might otherwise be disqualified. The Christchurch selection committee was: Miss J. IStewart, formerly headmistress of the Christchurch Girls’ High School; the Rev. Larry Loving, an American now living in Christchurch; Mr Lenz, formerly a master at St. Andrew’s College; and Mr Latham.
