THE NATIONAL GAME
Sir, —May I congratulate the referee in the match between two schools in the North Island which had to be stopped. I congratulate him not for his refereeing, which doubtless left nothing to be desired, but for referring in his report to the end of the game as “no side.’’ the correct term for the end of a game of Rugby football. It is curious that in a country which has imported this game not only to the country but into its heart the correct term is not only not used but little known, it is a tragedy that the game is not played here in the same manner as at Rugby School, where 500 boys play three days a week in winter without a referee or any argument. The captains are responsible, most players see any infringement, and the captains decide the penalty.— Yours, etc., GEORGE HENNESSY. j Waimate, July 4. 1956.
