INSPECTION OF PUBLIC WORKS
LIST OF PRIORITIES SUGGESTED PROPOSED VISIT BY M.P.’S TO CHRISTCHURCH “I would not like to see any party— Fuch as this proposed party of M.P.'s — let loose among all the various local bodies in Christchurch," said Mr R. A. Witbrock at a meeting of the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce last evening. The council decided to suggest to the Canterbury Progress League that that body, in collaboration with all local bodies in the city, should make a survey of all major 'works and draw up a master scheme of priorities. “The league is excellently placed to do this, and could do a wonderful service to the province." said Mr J. Roy Smith, who moved that the league be approached. The league, in a letter to the chamber, said it hoped that a close examination would be made of the proposal tn invite the Parliamentarians to Christchurch, but that “before any visit is sought, a co-ordinated survey of major works be made so that a visit, if it eventuates, can be thoroughly planned.” The closest possible co-ordination between the league and the chamber was sought, said the letter.
“Co-ordination Needed" Some co-ordination was needed on the drawing up of a list of priorities, said the president (Mr W. G. V. Fernie). reporting on a meeting between a deputation from the chamber find the Mavor of Christchurch (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.). The Mayor felt, said Mr Femie. that no visit would be practicable until after the municipal elections —possibly in February or March next year. On the proposal to draw up a list of priorities, the Mayor did not seem to be enthusiastic, and thought rather that the party should be introduced ■to each local body in turn, which would then state its case.
Mr W S Mac Gibbon said the Christchurch Citv Council referred the proposal to its finance committee, and asked for a at the next meeting. Personally, he welcomed Mr Smith’s motion, said Mr Mac Gibbon. and he th»t the league would work in full collaboration with th c City Council In Auckland, the party of MP’s was “rushed off it~ feet.” and the visit was expensive to the city and of no benefit to the members or Auckland. Mr D. W. Rain said the Progress Lcacu° would wholeheartedly welcome the chamber’s prnnnsal.
