TOILET PAPER
STANDARD SPECIFICATION BEING PREPARED “The Press” Special Service
WELLINGTON. July 5. The Standards Institute intends to fntroduce a specification for toilet paper. The specifications will comprise a Government purchasing standard, for supply to such large-scale users as the Works Department. State Hydroelectric Department and others. The standard has not been gazetted yet. but it is expected within a few weeks.
Manufacturers of toilet paper will probably all observe the standard, as supply to Government departments is understood to be substantial. An official of the Standards Institute confirmed the move, and explained that standards were usually arrived at by a committee of persons likely to have expert knowledge of a subject. The toilet paper committee would have included a scientist or person acquainted with paper texture. He said that the type of toilet •‘roll.” size and perforation would ail be matters for standardisation. The requirements would be comprehensive and not easily quoted. As far as he knew, no complaints had been responsible for the standardisation. The institute received requests for a standard—in this case it would be from a Government department. he said.
