COUNTRY WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Wai para.—A demonstration and talk on the propagation of shrubs was given by Miss Murgatroyd, of Balmoral, at the monthly meeting of the institute. Mrs Quigley who is leaving the district was bidden farewell and presented with a gift.

Coalgate.—Mrs Potts was elected delegate to attend the biennial conference in Auckland in July at the monthly meeting of the institute. A letter was read from the link in England. Mrs Green who is leaving for a trip to England was bidden farewell.

Glentunnel.—A “bring and buy” for "Operation Snowball” was held at the monthly meeting of the institute. Mrs Price, of Coalgate, spoke on Wales, where she lived for several years. Metherell presided, and Mrs Doak reported on the annual meetg of the federation.

Scargill-Motunau.—Mr Smythe spoke 01 world affairs at the monthly meeting oj the institute. Mrs Hansen presided.

Mairehau.—Mr H. Beaumont was the guest speaker at the monthly meeting of the institute. Mrs Baker presided. A letter was read from the Fulbourn institute, the link in England. j

South Brighton.—Mrs Ogden welcomed the guests at the birthday party of the institute. Solos were sung by Mrs Stewart, and the institute’s drama and singing eroups gave items.

Prebbleton.—A sales table for “Operation Snowball" was held at the monthly meeting of the institute. It was agreed to continue to sponsor two children under the Save the Children Fund. It was reported that a scrap book depicting typical scenes of New Zealand life has been compiled by a member, and together with others from institutes all over New Zealand will be forwarded to Ceylon in time for the conference of the Associated Countrywomen of the World.

North Canterbury Federation.—Three new members Mesdames McGowan. Thompson and Miss Aschen, were welcomed by the president (Mrs Clemett) at a meeting of the North Canterbury Federation of Country Women's Institute. It was report that, as a result of "Operation Snowball" £155 11s 7d had been forwarded to headouarters. The drama secretary (Mrs Fitzgerald) gave an account of the drama festival held recently. It was decided that some of the profits from this function should be spent on a cup and a trophy, the latter to be known as the Festival Trophy. Both these were to be for annual competition. The Hawarden group reported that a successful school of procedure hnd been held, and arrangements were made for a similar function to be held in the Cheviot group. Arrangements for the half-yearly meeting were discussed and it was decided that it be held in late October at Culverden. the display for the day to be “four handcraft articles made durng the winter." It was decided that, in addition to the usual "bring and buy sale.” a plant stall should be held, in an endeavour to increase the

federation’s finances. Ohoka —Mrs E Madsen, who presided at the monthly meeting of the Ohoka Country Women’s Institute, reported on the recent group meeting. It was reported that more than £ll had been raised for "Operation Snowball." Three members were given birthday cards and musical honours.

Waikuku Beach.—The voluntary organiser. Mrs Topp, was guest speaker at. the meeting of the Waikuku Beach Country Women’s Institute. Mrs Lindsay (vice-president) presided. Many competitions were held.

Mt. Pleasant.—Mrs G. L. Leversedge presided at the monthly meeting of the institute and welcomed two new members. A presentation was made to the retiring president. (Mrs J McGregor Smith).

Parnassus.—A demonstration of the making of paper flowers was given by Miss R. Craighead at the monthly meeting of the institute. Mrs Foster was appointed delegate to the Dominion conference in Auckland in July.

Sheffield.—Mrs' R. Reed, of Darfield, spoke of her trip to America at the annual meeting of the institute. Officers elected were:—president, Mrs L. T. Wright; committee. Mesdames Q. A. Wright. M. Bull. R. Macdonald. Morrison. Mangles. Everett. Alderson. Johnson, Edo. Cooper. Baxter and Page.

Waikari.—Mr Quiglev, of Omihi. gave an illustrated talk on his visit to America at the monthly meeting of the institute. Mrs P. Woods presided. New members were welcomed, and birthday sprays presented.

Bryndwr.—The following appointments were made at the monthly meeting of the institute:—secretary, Mrs Milne: n-inute-secretary. Mrs Com ley: treasurer, Mrs D. Chilvers: sales table. Mesdames Norton and Stowell: competitions. Mesdames Tait and Hancock: vicepresidents. Mesdames Comlev and Whitfield: hostess supervisor, Mrs Whitfield: hostess convener.
