U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS
240 Athletes To Compete
LOS ANGELES, June 28. Two hundred and forty athletes will compete for places in the United States Olympic team at the final trials at the Los Angeles Coliseum tomorrow ni?ht and Saturday afternoon.
The first three in each of the 17 events will be chosen for the Olympic team. Whatever their oast performances, the others will not be selected. Interest will be taken in the Forints—events in which United States athletes Save set an outstanding record in Olymoic competition.
This interest has been increased by ! the doubt as to whether Dave Simes | injured groin will enable him to compete. Few athletes have created such a stir in the United States as Sime. Almost unknown before last January. Sime has in the meantime equalled the world record of 9.3 sec for the 100 yards, and bettered the world records for 220 yards and 220 yards hurdles with the respective times of 20sec and 222 sec. Two weeks ago. Sime suffered a pulled muscle in the groin in a 200metre race. His leg is still painful and. although he iltends to run in the !00-metre trial, it is doubtful if he vnll start in the 200 metres. Even without Sime, there will be first-class fields in both sprints. Bob Morrow equalled the world re- ; cord of lOJsec for the 100 metres last ' rnday, and both he and Leamon King j have tied at the world record time of ■ ■ 3sec for the 100 yards recently. Ira ■ Murchison, who Qualified in the good ; tune of 10.4 sec. is exnected to be 1 aether strong contender. Morrow, Andy Stanfield, and Thane j Faker are given the best chances in lhe 200 metres. Stanfield and Baker ■ finished first and second respectively I m the event in the 1952 Olympics. Mai Whitfield, who has won the Olympic 800 metres twice, turned in a qualifying time of Imin W.wc, but Arnie Sowell, who ran L nun 46-7 sec last Saturday, and Tom kourtney, whose qualifying time was j® Msec. are the strong favourites. Lon Sourrier. the world record n ider for the 880 yards, is also in me field.
